New “Murkenbach” rainwater retention basin for Böblingen
To protect against flooding, the municipal drainage company Stadtentwässerung Böblingen (SEBB) is building a new rainwater retention basin with a storage volume of around 6000 cubic meters. The basin will be located underground in the Murkenbach area and will be used to temporarily store rainwater during heavy rainfall events and thus relieve the drainage infrastructure in situations of stress.
The official project kick-off took place with the ground-breaking ceremony on September 19, 2025, immediately followed by the start of construction: Construction work has been underway since Monday, September 29, 2025. According to current planning, the construction project is expected to take around two years to complete.

IWR services and project partners
IWR GmbH has been commissioned with the following services in the project:
- Planning
- Invitation to tender
- Local project supervision
IWR GmbH is working together with Konstruktionsgruppe Bauen AG as a partner on the structural design for this project.
The rainwater retention basin is a central structure for local flood protection. The underground design creates the required retention space without permanently occupying the area above ground. The project thus combines the expansion of water management protection functions with a space-saving integration into the Murkenbach area.
