Feasibility study – site drainage for new fire station south

New construction of the southern fire station

In the years 2020 to 2022, the Bergisch Gladbach City Council passed several resolutions approving the construction of the new Fire Station 2/ South on a plot of land near the A4 highway. As part of the preparation of the new development plan, the drainage of the property to be developed must be ensured. To this end, Abwasserwerk Bergisch Gladbach commissioned IWR GmbH to carry out a feasibility study.

Task and scope of the feasibility study

A study by the architectural firm “SUPERGELB” from Cologne envisages an area of 8,000 m² for the fire and rescue station in various drafts, with one draft serving as the basis for the feasibility study. In addition to ensuring a feasible drainage concept, our work focused on a comparison of variants. A total of six rainwater drainage options were examined and evaluated. In addition, a budget was drawn up and a mathematical proof of flooding was carried out.

Course of the study

The development of suitable drainage variants in this study was characterized by a number of special features. The location and utilization of public sewers and receiving waters, as well as protected areas, ecological factors and topographical and soil conditions on the site led to the exclusion of numerous variants. In addition, the specific requirements of a fire station placed special demands on rainwater and wastewater drainage. In the end, after intensive investigations and further expert opinions, a preferred variant was developed that included rainwater retention areas, infiltration systems and green roofs. The cost framework was calculated for this variant and a mathematical proof of flooding was provided.
