Complex planning requirement after landslide
in Ratingen-Hösel
Following the landslide near Ratingen-Hösel in spring 2024, rail traffic on the S6 line between Essen and Düsseldorf was interrupted for many months. Deutsche Bahn, represented by DB InfraGO, was faced with a complex planning and approval challenge. IWR GmbH was commissioned with the drainage planning in the early project phase after the first movements on the slope were detected. Just a few days after the contract was awarded, the slope completely slid away and the railroad line was completely blocked.

Drainage planning and approval procedure
at the Federal Railway Authority
In the subsequent fast-track procedure, all planning documents were redrawn and submitted to the Federal Railway Authority (EBA) for approval. IWR GmbH was responsible for the technical drainage planning and prepared the corresponding documents for the approval planning. The tasks included planning the drainage of surface and slope water to permanently secure the embankment. Despite very short processing times and high requirements, the approval planning was completed without any queries from the EBA regarding this sub-area – a sign of the professional quality of the work.
IWR GmbH’s involvement ended with the completion of the approval planning. Since then, further construction and safety measures have been implemented by Deutsche Bahn and its contractors.
