Refurbishment of the Weimar elevated tank: determination of necessity
The Weimar elevated tank of the Dörnberg water procurement association (WBV), which supplies around 13,000 inhabitants in rural Hesse with drinking water, had to be renovated in 2023. This became necessary after it was discovered during the annual cleaning of the tank that the inner concrete coating was blistering badly. This bubble formation could allow trapped water to enter the dead space between the coating and the concrete, which could jeopardize the germ-free drinking water supply. Despite continuous monitoring of the water analysis, which showed no direct threat to drinking water quality, swift action was required.
Planning and awarding the renovation work
After IWR GmbH, which is responsible for the operational management of WBV Dörnberg, informed the board of directors about the condition and requested a concrete technology report, the concrete renovation of the elevated tank was planned. On the basis of a cost calculation, IWR GmbH carried out a restricted invitation to tender, whereupon Flint Bautenschutz GmbH was awarded the contract with its patented “FlintsCoat” process. This process involves the application of a stainless steel-reinforced mortar that is approved in accordance with DIN 18551 and DVGW data sheet 347.

Implementation and completion of the refurbishment
The renovation of the elevated tank was carried out in strict compliance with the legal requirements of the Drinking Water Ordinance and other relevant regulations. The aim was to maintain the usability of the tank as a drinking water reservoir in compliance with all legal and hygiene requirements. A hygiene concept and technical protective measures were essential components of the construction measures. At present, one of the two water chambers has been completely renovated and is back in operation. The full refurbishment of the tank is expected to be completed when the second chamber is commissioned in May 2024.
