Pfingstweide in Feldatal: renovation work is nearing completion
The Pfingstweide in Groß-Felda is due to be reopened to traffic in mid-September 2025. Project manager Michael Rempe from engineering firm IWR GmbH (Cologne) and Mayor Leopold Bach explained the current status of the construction work during a site visit.
The foundation for the project was laid in 2019: The Vogelsberg district and the municipality of Feldatal agreed to extend the district road K 125 over a length of around 460 meters – from the center of the village towards the B 49. In 2023, the state of Hesse approved the funding and construction began in May 2024.
Construction measures at a glance
- The roadway was completely renewed.
- Water and wastewater pipes and the associated house connections were newly laid.
- The sidewalks are largely newly paved.
- The surface course of the roadway is still outstanding (as of July 2025).
One special feature concerns the entrance to Schellnhäuser Pfad: According to Mayor Bach and project manager Rempe, a sidewalk was built here to calm traffic.
In the middle section, a gabion wall was erected to separate the road area from the adjacent property. The sidewalk on the outside of the bend was made wider and fitted with raised kerbs. According to Rempe, this measure serves to increase safety. According to Mayor Bach, the wider sidewalk is located on a municipal property. He emphasizes that this will not result in an increased contribution from residents. An extinguishing water reserve for the fire department was set up at the old elevated tank from 1906. A new separate pipe connects the tank to the above-ground hydrant at the fire station. In addition, two further above-ground hydrants were installed for fire-fighting water extraction.
In addition, the previous gravel area at the cemetery was converted into a paved parking lot with demarcated parking spaces. Access to the cemetery is now barrier-free – as is access to the various levels of the cemetery grounds.
In the area from the end of the village to Sonnenstraße, rainwater runoff has been newly regulated: Rainwater is now no longer fed into the combined system and the sewage treatment plant, but flows through a separate pipe system under the road into ditches further down the road.
Financing and citizen participation
The investment sum amounts to just under two million euros. The Vogelsberg district, which is responsible for the construction of the district road, is contributing around 500,000 euros. The remaining amount is being raised by the municipality of Feldatal. Residents have so far been asked to pay for the sidewalks and house connections on a pro rata basis. It is currently unclear whether this will continue to be the case once the project has been completed.
The discussion about the so-called road expansion contributions (Strabs) is up to date: between August 25 and September 7, 2025, the citizens of Feldatal are to vote in a public survey on which form of road construction financing should apply in the future.
This survey is not legally binding. However, the municipal council has indicated that the results will serve as a basis for a decision. The mayor of Feldatal, Leopold Bach, who has spoken out in favor of abolishing the Strabs, expects a decision before the end of 2025.
