Securing the drinking water supply for the future

The municipality of Merenberg in Hesse is planning to build a deep well to secure its drinking water supply in the long term. This deep well is not only intended to compensate for the decreasing withdrawal volumes from the two existing sources (Untere Erlenhecke and Teufelsstruth), but also to ensure a reliable water supply in times of prolonged drought.

In times of climate change, the resilience of the drinking water supply is becoming increasingly important. By constructing deep wells in Merenberg, the municipality wants to ensure that its residents have an adequate supply of drinking water even in changing weather conditions.

Cooperation with the Lippe Environmental Office

IWR GmbH was commissioned with the planning of the deep well in 2023. A detailed hydrogeological analysis and an exploratory borehole are required before the actual construction. These measures are crucial in order to identify the optimal location for the deep well and lay the foundation for the success of the project.

IWR GmbH worked closely with Umweltbüro Lippe from Detmold to evaluate the hydrogeological map material. This cooperation enabled the municipality of Merenberg to receive expert advice on the selection of the well location.

Progress and current status of the deep well project

After close coordination with the Giessen Regional Council, permission was granted to explore the well site. The exploration work for the Merenberg deep well construction began in early November 2024 and is currently in full swing.

The ongoing investigations include, among other things:

  • Geophysical analyses to better understand the geological conditions at the site.
  • Pumping tests that evaluate the pumping capacity and water quality.

The results of these investigations form the basis for the next phase: the detailed planning and construction of the deep well.

Why deep well construction is important for Merenberg

The planned deep well will not only secure the municipality’s water supply, but also increase its independence from natural fluctuations in spring water extraction. In a region affected by climatic changes, this is an important step for the future.

The combination of modern technology, technical expertise and careful planning ensures that the municipality of Merenberg will be able to rely on a sustainable drinking water supply for decades to come.
